The process by which we will use the arts to re-orient the interaction between the land, the lake and its visitors includes engaging various sectors of the community through these temporary installations of art.

Oakland Women’s Rowing Club

I talked with the Oakland Women’s Rowing Club and they were very excited about the possibility of participating with Oakland’s Got HeART! and an art boat parade.  The club has been around since 1916 and is the oldest women's rowing club in the U.S. Sometimes called the "Ladies of the Lake", the women range from 50 to 80 years old.

Cleveland Cascade Volunteer Crew

Our flagship site is maintained by a dedicated crew of volunteers led by Barbara Newcombe, along with Dang Nguyen and Ken Brooks. At 93-years old, I called Barbara Gladys, with Dang and Ken being her Pips. They are excited about installing temporary artwork on the cascade and drawing attention to their efforts.

The Real Oakland (community drum and community lawn pics)

I talked with a variety of people who were at the lake lounging, drumming and a host of other leisurely activities. They were all very supportive of our efforts to bring art and community building at Lake Merritt. Oakland’s Got HeART! will build upon the informal community that currently exists at the lake and heighten the level of cross cultural engagement.
